備考

近年に日本国内で出版された文献には，本種とチョウセンエツCoilia ectenesを同種とする文献（環境省 2015）と別種とする文献（中坊編 2018; 細谷ほか 2019）がある．日本（エツ）と中国（チョウセンエツ）の個体群を比較した研究によると，核DNAの分析において日本と中国の個体群はそれぞれ単系統性がみられるものの，ミトコンドリアDNAの分析において日本と中国の個体群の遺伝的距離は種内レベルに過ぎないことから，日本と中国の個体群は同一種とされる（Han et al. 2015; Sun et al. 2019）．初夏に美味で，刺身，から揚げ，酢の物にして食べられる（田中 1936; 中坊編 2018）．有明海沿岸には弘法大師が流したヨシの葉がエツになったという伝説がある（田島 2014）．
