ヨロイボウズハゼ属

Genus Lentipes Günther, 1861

ヨロイボウズハゼおよびキジムナーボウズハゼ，ブナガヤボウズハゼ，Lentipes palawanirufusの4種は現在のところ，オスの色彩でのみ識別でき，雌の同定は困難である．mtDNAでも識別できない（mtDNAの分析ではさらにLentipes ikeaeおよびLentipes sp. sensu Taillebois et al. (2014)とも混合される）ことから，これらの種は最近分岐した種であると推測されている（Maeda et al. 2021）．

学名の語源

bunagaya = ブナガヤは沖縄の神話に登場する生物で，沖縄島北部の大宜味村で特に知られる．森や小川に住んでおり，通常，赤い髪あるいは前身が赤い子供として描かれる．雄の特徴的な赤色の体色を，沖縄の神話に登場するブナガヤに見立てた．
