本種は遺伝的に大きく分けて2系統が存在する(Watanabe et al. 2000; Hardouin et al. 2018).茨城県,長野県,沖縄島には中国系統が移植されている(Watanabe et al. 2000).佃煮にされる(尼岡ほか 2020).ホソモツゴはタイプ標本の所在が明らかではない(中坊編 2013).
