本種の当初の和名は「ドロモロコ」であったが,この名で呼んでいる地方はどこにもないとして和名を「スナモロコ」に変更した(田中 1930).本種は遺伝的に4つの系統(JL,NCL,SCL1,SCL2)が存在し,そのうちの2つ(JL,SCL1)が日本に分布する.JLは日本在来のものでSCL1は人為的に移殖されたものである可能性がある(Jang-Liaw et al. 2019).
